Joy Gardner’s death on the 28th July 1993 is one of three high profile cases of Black women (the others being Dorothy “Cherry” Groce in 1985 and Cynthia Jarrett in 1985), who deaths involved the police. The Joy Gardner Campaign, led by Bernie Grant, was founded by Joy’s family and friends, local MP’s, community groups and concerned individuals. They fought to uncover the truth about her death and to organize public activities to maintain the pressure on the Home Office and Police. They demanded the following: a full public inquiry into the circumstances of Joy Gardner’s killing to include a review of all immigration Police, deportation practice and procedures; that the Police and immigration Officers involved in her death be immediately charged and brought to trial; immediate compensation for Joy’s family; and the repeal of the Immigration and Asylum Act of 1993.
