Shaping the Future by Understanding the Past

The Bernie Grant Trust has 20 years of experience of working with grassroots community activists from disadvantaged communities to develop leadership skills through bespoke training programmes rooted in building a better understanding of Britain’s complex and rich history of struggles for equality.

An Urgent Appeal: Put the Black Back into the Curriculum

Black Lives Matter has thrown a spotlight on the shocking exclusion of the black experience in our education system. The Bernie Grant Trust has recently pioneered a new approach to providing teachers with the educational resources they need to change this straightaway. But we need money to take this further.

In 2018 the Trust won an award from the Heritage Lottery Fund to run a major programme encourage awareness of black history using archives in a number of ways. As part of this we developed a new and unique resource for teachers to provide them with easily accessible material so that they can reference the black experience in their teaching across the curriculum.

Much more needs to be done to develop the model we have created, to extend it to a much wider range of topics, and to bring in useful material from both our own archive and other rich sources of material.

We want to make it easier for teachers to reference the lived experience of black people in whatever they teach, as a matter of routine. Now more than ever as the whole world is focused on tackling systemic inequality we must take a good look at who we were so we can truly understand who we are and how we can become the society we want to be.

Please donate today, and help us Put the Black Back into the Curriculum, and give the teachers the support they need.
